Responsible Tourism

Preserving the outback for future generations

Caring for the land, animals and Country

At Katherine Outback Experience, our commitment to sustainability is rooted in our deep respect for the natural environment that enriches our farming and tourism practices. By embracing eco-friendly methods, we ensure that our operations not only showcase but also protect the rich biodiversity that surrounds us. This dedication to environmental stewardship enhances the authenticity and quality of the outback experiences we offer, making each visit a true reflection of sustainable living in the Northern Territory.

At the heart of our operations at Katherine Outback Experience is a commitment to ecotourism and maintaining a low environmental footprint. Here's a look at our ongoing efforts:

Sustainable tourism

As an accredited Sustainable Tourism business, we take pride in providing engaging tourism experiences based on robust sustainability practices and environmental appreciation.

Tree planting

From 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2024, we planted 207 trees. We have potted a further 120 clippings ready to be planted in 2025.

Water conservation

We collect rainwater in three large water tanks onsite which services our property and operations year-round.

Re-use

Thanks to our reusable water cups, we save over 12,000 cups from landfill each year. Our team uses reusable water bottles and we have water bottle refill stations onsite. We encourage our guests to bring their water bottles along and refill them.

Energy conservation

We have 25.75 kilowatts of solar-panels that power our daily activities. Our undercover arena is equipped with LED lights that use 87% less power than traditional lights.

Biodegradable and compstable packaging

Where it is not possible to use reusable food packaging (i.e. takeaways), we use  biodegradable and compostable food and drink packaging.

Eco-friendly outback experiences at the Katherine Outback Experience

Outback show

Celebrate the Northern Territory’s unique pastoral history and culture through real horse-starting, working dog demonstrations and storytelling. This show is raw and real, the same as if an audience wasn’t present.

Ethical integrity is at the core of everything we do. Here's a look at our ongoing efforts:

Accessible Tourism

We have strived to craft inclusive experiences including our Outback Shows and Farm Therapy Program. We hold Accessible Tourism Accreditation for vision, limited mobility, wheelchairs and scooters and cognitive/ autism.

Animal Welfare

We showcase the ethical training of horses and working dogs. To ensure animals are well-conditioned, we maintain dental, farrier, and worming records. Equine chiropractic care is provided bi-monthly, and diets include essential minerals. Guest reviews consistently highlight our animal’s enthusiasm and happy demeanour, reflecting their love and care at Katherine Outback Experience.

LGBTIQA+

We are proud members of GALTA, and warmly welcome the LGBTIQA+ community to Katherine Outback Experience.

Buy Local

Where possible we maintain a ‘Buy Local Policy’ supporting Katherine and NT based businesses.

Sponsorship

As a small family owned and operated business, we support a number of local events and fundraisers.

Charities & Foundations

Although we support a number of charities, two charities close to our heart are Dolly’s Dream and Farm Angels.
